The term ‘Juris Illuminae’ is Latin for “the light of the Law” - in Law school, Juris is a monthly student publication that aims to prompt discussion about pertinent legal issues and hence shed light on these issues.
Ranging from coverage of current legal issues and updates to interviews with prominent members of the legal community and reviews of the law currently in place in Singapore, the content of Juris varies from month to month, often with each issue centering on a main theme. Past issues of Juris in the 2005/2006 academic year have featured, for example, articles that discuss the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) scandal, together with a contrast between the governance and management of charities in Singapore and in other jurisdictions. Another issue focused on “Lawyers and Ethics”; prompted by CJ Yong’s (as he then was) comment on the falling standards of young lawyers, the issue went on to discuss legal ethics in Singapore and the possibility of addressing it though legal education.
That aside, Juris is also very much in tune with the Law student. Issues often feature helpful advice for Law students such as tips for would-be interns and personal accounts of relevant experiences as a student.
Of late, Juris has also moved toward a more reader-friendly layout, with more graphics and space to enable easy-reading.
You may read Juris online or individual articles here.We have also set up a discussion forum for Juris here as well.
