Just recently, the Honourable Attorney-General of the Republic of Singapore, Professor Walter Woon SC startled the legal fraternity by speaking out regarding sentencing methods in the Court of Appeal, making it the first time in more than 10 years that an Attorney-General has appeared in court during his appointment. His call for established sentencing guidelines to be “buried” was met with counterarguments by Chief Justice Chan Sek Keong and Judge of Appeal V.K. Rajah. Regardless of the success of his speech in influencing the direction of the final court decision, the Attorney-General’s words have caught the attention of the media and the legal fraternity alike. The outcome of the debate will most likely have an impact on the way in which criminal cases are decided in future.
The 22nd Singapore Law Review Lecture continues its tradition of bringing current legal issues of interest to the fore for students. This year, the Review is very fortunate to have Professor Walter Woon deliver his lecture entitled “Crime and Punishment: The Problems of Sentencing.” It will certainly be a most illuminating experience to listen to him speak at our upcoming Lecture regarding the very same topic he argued in court about. Besides Professor Woon, numerous luminaries of the law will also be in attendance at the Lecture. You will certainly not leave empty-handed from such a rare opportunity to meet and mingle with the pivotal figures who uphold our legal system.
Please register before coming as seats are limited.
