Although this post makes it sound as if we have an exceedingly elaborate recruitment process, there are only two stages in it — first a prospective member fills in an application to be a SLR member; and second he or she goes for an interview where we will find out more about their abilities and how they can fit in the SLR.

However, we intend to help prospective members find their niche in SLR. You can do this by appealing to what the SLR needs. We have broadly categorised them into three broad terms — Writing, Organising of Events and Design. Please do check out their individual posts and FAQ to find out how you can help us recruit you.

The Application Form

The application form is made up of three broad parts:

  • Your Particulars (so that we can contact you)
  • Some questions to help us find out more about you
  • A 300 Word Essay on any legal topic of your choice

There is also a question on what appointments you may have on our interview days (24 and 25 August). This is to help us to schedule your interview with the greatest convenience to the both of us and reduce correspondence. We will really appreciate if this is filled to the best of your knowledge.

All parts of the Application Form must be filled up as we may exercise our discretion to reject the application if you fail to do so. Only application forms sent to our email address (recruitment@singaporelawreview.org) will be accepted and must reach us by 22 August, 5pm. We may exercise our discretion to reject the application if these conditions are not met.

The Interview

Upon evaluating the application, we will reply by email to you with an interview date and time if we elect to do so. Our interviews will be held in the SLR Room at the NUS Faculty of Law, B Block, Level 1. Please be punctual as there are likely to be many other interviewees like yourself on that day.

The interview is your chance to shine! Almost all our recruitment decisions are based primarily on how the applicant answer our queries and how they come across to us. The questions to be asked are based on clarification of the details of the application form and any other queries intended to find out more about you personally.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: How many people is the SLR looking for?
We are looking for a small number of people (about 5 to 10), although this group would be larger than the last recruitment drive held in May. As we are interested in maintaining the prestige and exclusivity of membership, we would not hold any more recruitment drives for the next year or recruit a large number of people. Even so, if we find a good reason to recruit a good applicant, we would not hesitate to do so just because we have limited places.

Q: How assured I am of holding my place as a member of the SLR once my application is successful?
We put great emphasis in finding an applicant who is interested and devoted to our cause. Most new members will put their talents to use once they are part of the SLR, and we do not usually find a need to fire anyone. Nevertheless, we do not demand members to be part of the SLR against their own wishes, and are free to resign if they want to do so.

Q: I am not from NUS Law. Can I still apply?
For the purposes of meetings and event organisation, we request that applicants be students based full time in Singapore. We generally prefer NUS Law students, but we will not reject others outright, and you are welcomed to apply even if you are not from NUS Law.

Q: I would like to help out in Organisation of events/Design, but I’m afraid I can’t write fabulously. Would the essay component in the application form lower my chances at success?
Although we request that all our applicants have to write on any legal topic of their choice in 300 words, the quality of the essay is not a material factor in our decision if the applicant shows himself to fulfil our needs in other categories such as event organisation or design. We encourage applicants with other talents to try their hand at writing even if they are not good at it. This also works vice-versa — a good writer who has no prior experience in events or technical skills is also welcomed to apply.

Q: I wasn’t successful when I applied this time. May I appeal?
Unfortunately, the SLR’s decision in recruitment matters is final.
