The SLR gives members the unique experience of organizing major law events from the first step to fruition. From sealing partnership deals, planning and executing various stages of an event to inviting VIPs, being a member of the SLR offers valuable lessons that will be crucial and attractive to a future employer. It is also a chance to meet many of the local legal fraternity’s biggest “stars” personally — from legal academia, law firm Partners, Judges to the Minister of Law — no law club in Singapore offers such opportunities to its members.
The SLR’s flagship event, the SLR Lecture, is Singapore’s longest running lecture series that focuses on contemporary legal issues. Be a part of that tradition. As an event that is completely student organized, SLR members are involved in choosing the speaker of the event. The list of past speakers for the SLR Lecture is virtually a who’s who in Singapore’s legal fraternity. The SLR Lecture has also looked beyond Singapore’s shores, and the Chief Justices of Malaysia have twice spoken on our lecture.
Building upon the success of our past events, the SLR is continually seeking new ways to fulfill its aims. As we look to raise our profile overseas, new members are continually needed not just to provide the hands on which our success would be built on, but to continue and expand the vision of the SLR. We are particularly interested in applicants who demonstrate an ability to think out of the box (literally and figuratively) and who can handle the pressure and stress of organizing events. If you have the zest and confidence to provide the SLR with the edge, we need you.
If you are interested to join the SLR as a member, don’t hesitate to send in your application!
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: I am applying to be a member and I would like the SLR to consider my abilities in the field of operations. What should I put in my application form?
The most important section in this regard is your listing of your experiences in managing or organizing events, big or small, relevant to the Law or not. Whether you were a bit player in the organization or its leader, we would like to see them. The information listed would help us assess your ability to aid us in our endeavours.
Q: I am applying to be a member and I would like the SLR to consider my abilities in the field of operations. What kind of interview questions should I be expecting?
We will basically ask you on your experience you have listed in your application. We will also be interested in asking about your opinion on various legal or non-legal issues.
Q: I think I’m really interested in operations, but I am afraid my writing is not really outstanding. Can I forgo the essay component of the application?
Unfortunately, the essay component is a necessary part of our application process. We suggest that you try to complete it to the best of your ability. If we can find a way to fit you into our club in the operations aspect, your less-than-outstanding essay will not be a barrier to our decision to welcome you into the SLR.
