The SLR gives members with knowledge of design (both in print and web) a unique experience unparalleled in any law club in NUS. Besides having the opportunity to continually show off their skills to the student population in Law School and beyond, such members also have near-complete artistic freedom to use their skills in real-world applications. If you’ve ever had an interest in designing materials to communicate ideas and messages to the greater populace, the SLR is the only law club in Singapore that allows you to use, sharpen and hone these skills to its highest levels.
As the technical and aesthetic arm of the Singapore Law Review, your knowledge and skills are critical to the success of the events organized by the SLR. While much amount of hard work has gone into the organization of events, the posters, invitation cards, program sheets and websites that you design shows the world the amount of effort and thought the SLR has put into their events.
Besides managing the publicity of SLR events, members with technical skills are called upon to manage the SLR’s web presence. This website for one, runs on Wordpress, and our soon-to-be launched Forum, runs on SMF. Ever wanted to run a LAMP server on the Internet but never found the opportunity to do it, or just wanted to exert god-like powers over SLR’s virtual world?
If you fancy something less virtual, members with experience in Photoshop, InDesign and other programs are needed for the many various activities in the SLR. Your assistance and creative energy is needed for the design of Juris Illuminae and our other publications. Whether you do it for fun, you are just interested or you are a closet expert at such things, the SLR needs you!
If you are interested to join the SLR as a member, don’t hesitate to send in your application!
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: I am applying to be a member and I would like the SLR to consider my abilities in the field of Design. What should I put in my application form?
The most important section in this regard is your listing of technical skills. We are looking for members who are sufficiently skilled in programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Pagemaker, Quark Xpress, FrontPage, Dreamweaver or other equivalents. Skills in diverse areas such as webmastering, web design, PHP programming, painting should also be listed there. If you can tell your type from your typography, we are also interested in seeing that in your application form.
Q: I am applying to be a member and I would like the SLR to consider my abilities in the field of design. What kind of interview questions should I be expecting?
We will basically ask you on your experience in the programs you have listed in your application. We would also ask you for your opinions on some of the publicity material the SLR has designed so far to see how you can contribute to our creative processes in this regard. If you have additional experience in managing publicity, we would also be interested to hear your experience there.
In this field especially, we would be very appreciative to see a portfolio. If you were involved in designing a publication, we would like to see that publication. A webmaster or web designer should be prepared to let us see her or his work so that we may assess her or his suitability. A portfolio may give you a significant leg-up over other candidates.
Q: I’ve dabbled in the things that have been mentioned, but I think I really suck at these programs you mentioned. Can I still apply?
Quite frankly, we suck as well. Let us be the judge of whether your abilities are useful for the SLR. We encourage applicants to put in whatever they are all right with and we will find out more about how we can fit you into our plans.
Q: I think I’m really interested in this design thing, but I am afraid my writing is not really outstanding. Can I forgo the essay component of the application?
Unfortunately, the essay component is a necessary part of our application process. We suggest that you try to complete it to the best of your ability. If we can find a way to fit you into our club in the design aspect, your less-than-outstanding essay will not be a barrier to our decision to welcome you into the SLR.
